OPEN WORKSHOPS 2014

May. 21, 2014 · Joidart

On Saturday afternoon the Joid'art store at Passeig del Born number 2 in Barcelona became a craftsman's workshop. It was the venue for the latest edition of the enamelling demonstrations we have been organising for years as part of the A-FAD Open Workshops. Our collaborator, enameller Luz Barrabés, set up her temporary workshop in our store in one of the coolest parts of Barcelona. She spent over 2 hours demonstrating the delicate and painstaking fire enamelling process behind our jewellery. Customers, passers-by and onlookers were rapt by the magic of converting powdered glass into works of art. For those of you who missed it, broadly speaking, the process consists of: Cleaning the piece to be enamelled them applying powdered glass with a brush or feather and distilled water. Then, the water is evaporated. Once the piece is dry, it is place in the kiln crystal so that the powdered glass melts and turns into the fire enamel for the finished piece. Finally, the piece is removed and cooled before the piece is finished. It's that simple and that artistic. Thank you to everyone who came by to watch it live! We hope to do it again sometime.
